Let’s do this again!

After the success of our first event, we’re back for another one! Join us for an evening of reading, community, and conversation with Patrick O’Neil.

Patrick O’Neil is the author of the memoir Gun, Needle, Spoon. He is a contributing editor for Sensitive Skin Magazine, a Pushcart nominee, and two-time nominee for Best of the Net. He is co-creator of the Why There Are Words reading series in Los Angeles.

The Open Mic starts at 7 pm, so if you are interested in reading send us a sample of your work and you will have 5 minutes to share it.

Join California Poets in the Schools, teachers, Juan Cardenas and Jessica Wilson on a journey through narrative poetry. Write in your own voice and learn new ways to express yourself.

This 6 series workshop will include food, so get ready for some delicious learning, and connection building through creative writing.

Remember the smell of sizzling carne asada, the taste of calabasas con queso, the first time you made arroz, or papas.
Our senses deliver us into memory, and our memories will fuel our poems and our palates.

Join us for a new activity for kids (ages 5-12) and their families: A is for Action: A Social Justice Book Club for Kids.

Literature can transform the way we look at the world, deepening our understanding of even the most complex issues of the day. February’s book is Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers’ Strike of 1909 by Michelle Markle. Library copies are available to borrow at the information desk.

Los Angeles Literature Events 5/21/18 –5/27/18

Please join us to meet and hear from two authors receiving the Horace Mann Upstander Awards, given yearly to celebrate authors who publish fictional stories that encourage activism on the part of the protagonist. The authors will discuss their work, receive their awards from Antioch University Los Angeles, and the presentation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. For ages: 10-adult.

The Summer of Owen Todd, by Tony Abbott is the winner of the Annual Book Award.  Mordicai Gerstein is the Lifetime Achievement Award winner for his commitment to activism, and particularly for his latest book, The Boy and the Whale.
