Our weekly Conchas y Café Zine – Bilingual Community Writing Workshops are free and open to adults.  This program offered by DSTL Arts, provides a 12-week creative writing workshop for adults of all ages. Participants learn more about creative writing, poetry, publishing, zine-making, and more, while receiving writing exercises and feedback on their work. Participants also have the opportunity to publish and  present their work in a zine of writing produced through the program. A public reading and release party celebrates the culmination of each 12-week series.

BIK_LA_ART-6-900x600Every Tuesday evening Luis Antonio Pichardo hosts the Conchas y Café workshop at the Chicano Resource Center in East Los Angeles, open for adults interested in developing skills through the arts. During a recent meeting, the evening workshop began with discussing a quote by German playwright Bertolt Brecht: “In times of disorder, of organized confusion, of inhumane humanity, nothing should appear natural.” The group shared their thoughts casually like friends having breakfast with conchas and coffee, but the gossip was focused on their experience living in “times of disorder.”

Join us for a Moon Tide Press Reading by three authors:

Alexis Rhone Fancher, is the author of: How I Lost My Virginity to Michael Cohen, State of Grace: The Joshua Elegies, Enter Here and Junkie Wife. Her photographs are published worldwide, and she is a multiple Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee. She is also poetry editor of Cultural Weekly.

Ron Koertge taught English and Creative Writing at Pasadena City College for 37 years. He has published more than 25 books of poetry and fiction, most recently: Vampire Planet, Yellow Moving Van, and Coaltown Jesus. He is also 2018 Poet Laureate of South Pasadena, California.

Lee Rossi is the author of four books of poetry: Darwin’s Garden, Wheelchair Samurai, Ghost Diary, and Beyond Rescue.

Co-founded by Luis Antonio Pichardo and Jennifer Fuentes in late 2012, DSTL Arts began as Luis’ vision for empowering the next generation of working artists from underserved and underrepresented communities in the arts, serving, at first, only youth whom aspired to become working artists in spite of a lack of a support system in their immediate community, including their families.
