The Book Writers Group meets every first Monday of the month at the Robertson Branch Library. Are you writing a book and looking for feedback? Need deadlines to help you reach your writing goals? Then this is the group for you!

For each meeting, please bring 5-10 double-spaced  pages of writing to share with the group. Every member will have time to present his/her writing and receive constructive feedback.

Depending on the size of the group, each person will receive 10-15 minutes of time to share and  receive feedback.

A is for ACTION A Social Justice Book Club for Kids at Eagle Rock Branch Library, LAPL – Kids Event 

Literature can transform the way we look at the world. The book choice for December,  is If the World Were a Village, by David J. Smith. This 2002 publication is part of CitizenKid, a collection of books that inform kids about the world and inspire them to be better global citizens. It imagines the world’s population—all 6-8 billion of us—as a village of just 100 people.

Event offers library copies available to borrow at Information Desk., for children ages 6-12.

Conchas y Café: Bilingual Community Writing Workshops at Vernon – Leon H. Washington Jr. Memorial Branch Library, LAPL

Our weekly Conchas y Café Zine – Bilingual Community Writing Workshops are free and open to adults.  This program offered by DSTL Arts, provides a 12-week creative writing workshop for adults of all ages. Participants learn more about creative writing, poetry, publishing, zine-making, and more, while receiving writing exercises and feedback on their work. Participants also have the opportunity to publish and  present their work in a zine of writing produced through the program. Poets & Allies 5th Anniversary Reading with S. Pearl Sharp & Open Mic at My Place Café

Join us for the 5th Anniversary Poets & Allies Reading and Open Mic, featuring poet, author, journalist, filmmaker, and actor S. Pearl Sharp. Joining her will be featured poets Romaine Washington, Jessica Gallion, & True the Poet.

Pearl Sharp’s published literary works include Women for Beginners, the plays Dearly Beloved and The Sistuhs, four volumes of poetry, and two poetry with jazz CDs. Platica: A History of Spanish in the United States at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes

Platica presents Rosina Lozano, PhD,  Associate Professor of History at Princeton University, and her new book,  An American Language: The History of Spanish in the United States.

The nation has always been multi-lingual, and Spanish language rights, in particular, have remained an important political issue in to the present. After the US-Mexican War, Spanish became a language of politics, and its speakers clashed over where its speakers and  its opponents used it and what its presence meant and whether to allow its continuation..

Lozano is also author of the book, Intertwined Roots: Mexican Americans and Native Americans in the Southwest., which tells the story of the ever-changing relationship between Mexican Americans and Indigenous peoples.

Nafissa Thompson-Spires & Heads of the Colored People at California Institute of Technology

An evening with Nafissa Thompson-Spires is presented by the James Michelin Distinguished Visitors Program.

Nafissa Thompson-Spires is an associate professor of creative writing at Cornell University, who earned several honors for her first book, Heads of the Colored People, including a 2019 PEN America Literary Award, a Whiting Award, the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, and a Hurst Wright Legacy Award, among many others. Other work has appeared in The Paris Review Daily, Dissent, and The White Review.

Vanessa Angelica Villarreal at Otis Visiting Writers Series at Otis College

Poet, essayist and artist Vanessa Angelica Villarreal was born in the borderlands of McAllen, Texas. She is the author of the poetry collection, Beast Meridian, and is recipient of a 2019 Whiting Award, a 2018 Texas Institute of Letters Poetry Prize, and a 2019 Kate Tufts Discovery Award finalist. Anxiously Yours: A Night of Our Collected Anxiety at ALOUD Reading Series, Central Library, LAPL

Curated by Amanda Stern,  Anxiously Yours: A Night of Our Collected Anxiety, is an ALOUD event with performances by Atsuko Okatsuka, Dr. Avishek Adhikari, Chris Kraus, Christoper Noxon, Lisa Kring, and Rumer Willis.

After publishing a memoir about growing up with an undiagnosed panic disorder, hundreds of people wrote to author Amanda Stern to confide in her about their own anxiety. She realized that if every person who confided  in her could begin speaking publicly about their own struggles, the stigma of mental illness would be entirely eradicated.  In an attempt to kick-start this reality, she’s assembled a variety of sources, each experiencing anxiety form a different lens: a comic, a therapist, a mindfulness expert, and a scientist.

Book Talk: The Mojave Road in 1863 Event at The Autry

Join author and photographer Jeff Lapides for a presentation on the earliest photographs of the Desert West, taken by Rudolph D’Heureuse in 1863 on a grand journey from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the banks of the Colorado River and the mines of Eldorado Canyon. The images capture the Mohave Desert as it was experienced by travelers more than 150 years ago.

A book signing will follow the presentation.
